Jewelry is expensive and prone to damage and depreciation. While we always recommend you visit your nearest jeweler to get broken jewelry repaired, it is sometimes too hectic and time-consuming. In no circumstances should you attempt to repair jewelry that is severely damaged or too expensive for chances of further damage.

With inexpensive fashion and costume jewelry, however, you can alleviate many problems on your own, provided you employ skillful precautions.

Tanisha Howard shares solutions to the most common jewelry repair problems. Read on

Problem 1: Dirty or Tarnished?

Cleaning fashion jewelry is simple but choose your cleaner wisely. Only use a jewelry cleaner that specifically states that it is safe for costume jewelry and read the ingredients to make sure that it does not contain alcohol, acids, or ammonia because these can strip the gold or silver plate. Use a children’s soft bristle tooth brush for cleaning around costume jewelry stones. Its probably not be a good idea to immerse rhinestone jewelry because the stones can become unglued.

If your fashion jewelry items are only lightly tarnished a good buffing with a soft dry jewelry cloth may do the trick. For more heavily tarnished items a jewelry polish can work wonders.

Problem 2: Worn out gold or silver plating?

Because typical fashion jewelry plating is very thin it can eventually rub off from wear or become damaged from the use of harsh chemicals, creams, or perfumes. If this happens there are several options in gold and silver re-plating solutions that can be found online. Some are fairly simple and can be performed without the use of heat or electricity while others are a little more complex. I found one website in particular that offers a very good variety of plating options (e.g. immersion plating, pen plating) and general plating instructions for precious metals including gold, silver, platinum, and rhodium. It is Click on the contents and search box and then plating gateway. One word of caution: I would recommend buying only cyanide free plating solutions as cyanide is poisonous. For silver lovers there is one product that I have personally used that has worked well for me and it is called Silver Brite. This is an all in one cream that cleans, polishes, and re-plates worn silver on jewelry and other items. It is very easy to use and fairly inexpensive. Just rub the cream on with an applicator sponge or a Q-tip for small items and rub off with the buffing cloth that is included with the kit. The result is a clean, sparking silver finish.

Problem 3: Loose or missing stones?

If a stone such as a cubic zirconia, plastic, or glass has become loose or fallen out a drop or two of super glue will do the trick. Just be careful not to use too much. You don’t want the glue oozing out of the sides and causing the piece to adhere to your skin or some other object. Most of the time a single drop will suffice unless it is a very large stone in which case you may want to use two drops. If you cannot find the missing stone there are companies online that sell loose cz stones if you have a particular chain or ring band you want to salvage. Simply do an internet search for cz stones.

Problem 4: Broken clasp?

If your fashion necklace or bracelet has a broken clasp make sure it is the actual clasp that is broken. The problem may be a broken jump ring which is a tiny metal ring that is open in one spot which connects the clasp to the chain. If this is the problem it can be easily fixed. First identify what kind of clasp it is (e.g. lobster clasp which is shaped like a lobster claw and has a tiny spring loaded lever, a magnetic clasp which is just as it sounds, or a spring ring which is also spring loaded) then visit your local craft store or do a search online for jewelry clasps and you should find what you need. If the clasp is soldered on you will need to contact a jewelry repair professional.

Problem 5: Out of date:

If you simply want to add a new flair to your old fashion jewelry pieces you can simply mix and match. If you have a special pendant that you are especially fond of give it a new life with a more contemporary chain. Add new charms to your favorite bracelet or re-plate that old silver necklace with a shiny new gold finish. Be creative!

Jewelry Trends of an Era Past: 1990s

After the explosion of outrageous trends throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, ‘90s saw a shift toward minimalism, and who can forget, GRUNGE – ah yes, Kurt Cobain-esque, unkempt hair, flannel, ripped jeans, combat boots, oversized sweaters, Doc Martens, Soundgarden, Nirvana, doesn’t it just scream nostalgia!

While some trends came and went, others had a far deeper impact on contemporary fashion. Fashion jewelry was no exception.

Yes, chokers. Chokers were hot in the ‘90s. Although the trend has come a long way and you have way more options today than you did in the ‘90s, there is no denying that ‘90s gave this Victorian-era style the push into modernity.

Bracelets were the charm of nineties’ fashion. From punk-inspired to bondage-inspired fashion bracelets to ID bracelets, everybody had a favorite and we all loved it!

Here is an old trend that is thoroughly ‘90s’. Mood rings contain liquid crystal that reacts to the changes in skin temperature to change its color. Different colors indicate different moods and hence the name. The idea sounds as ‘90s’ as it can get! Although synonymous with 90s fashion, mood rings were not created in the ‘90s. In fact, it was a trend carried on from the ‘70s. But well, the ‘90s are notorious for an obsession with ‘70s pop culture.

Anklets are way more popular in the orient, so to speak, than in the rest of the world. In the US, the trend began in the 1930s but didn’t quite become the rage it did in the nineties. Last we heard, anklets were making a comeback in more sophisticated and glamorous avatars (read fine jewelry).

Toe rings, like anklets, are oriental in origin. Think royalty of the past, important figures too glamorous to not adorn their feet. While the trend picked up steam in the nineties, we vote it the least likely to make a comeback, unless paired with anklets.

Engagement Ring Insurance

If you have bought an engagement ring, you should get it insured so that your investment is protected well into the future.  When it comes to protecting your newly-wed investment, engagement ring insurance should be on the top of your priority list.

The following article by shares tips on wedding ring insurance and advice on how to best put an insurance policy on your engagement ring.

Engagement Ring Insurance 101

What Ring Insurance Is:

There are a few ways to insure your engagement ring. Ring insurance can be purchased as an extension (also called a “rider”) for your renters or homeowners policy. Renters and homeowners policies cover the stuff in your home, but only up to a certain dollar value. Expensive, special items, like engagement rings, art and electronics, are guaranteed through scheduled personal property coverage—an insurance policy extension that covers particular items. Another option is to insure your ring through a company that specializes in jewelry insurance, which might offer more coverage than a standard homeowners policy (replacing a lost or stolen ring rather than paying a set amount of cash, for instance). Other Tips for Picking a Wedding Band

You’ve been through all of the ‘guides’ on picking the perfect wedding  band, and most of them say the same things – start early, set a budget, get the right size – and for good reason! These are points that need emphasizing. However, they’ve probably been emphasized enough for you by now, and you need just a few more healthy tips to get the creative juices flowing.

Here are some suggestion, you may or may not follow.

Keep at Least One Thing in Common with your Engagement Ring

You don’t have to match everything – in fact, we advise against it. But to symbolize continuity, make sure there is at least thing in common between your wedding band and engagement ring, like similar cut stones.

Avoid rings that overwhelm

Wedding bands are forever (that’s what we hope), and so are engagement rings. It’s important that the two rings don’t overpower each other and go well together. Your rings will look best when they complement each other.

Go for the same width

Engagement rings and wedding bands of the same width look best together. When the rings are the same width, it makes more sense to experiment in tone and color. For instance, you can try a dual-tone look with yellow and white gold rings.

Matching with your spouse not a necessity

There is hardly anything you wear that matches the apparel of your significant other. So why should your wedding ring be any different. You both have different tastes and personalities – that’s what makes this union so amazing.

Leave room for customization

Don’t solder the rings together, to accommodate future customizations and upgrades. (In fact, we can’t ever stand for soldering.) It so happens that the human body changes with age; some lose weight and some get fat. This affects ring size. If you are prone to weight changes, keep in mind that eternity rings are near impossible to resize. In any case, leave room for small changes.

Reasons to Opt for Vintage Rings

Face it or not, making jewelry at such an enormous rate as we are doing worldwide right now is not very comforting to the environment. Mining for gems and metal itself is an environmental hazard, not to speak anything of the manufacturing process. There is also widespread concern over what have come to be known as blood diamonds – mining through unfair labor. For the most eco-friendly of us, one of the most suitable options is to go for vintage jewelry. It has already been manufactured and will therefore cause no further damage to the ecosystem. Plus it comes in exquisitely beautiful designs!

Celeste Perron form Brilliant Earth gives us 5 reasons to go for vintage rings.

But there’s a compelling case for choosing a vintage engagement ring. It might take a little more hunting before you discover the perfect one, but the hunt can be a big part of the fun, and putting extra thought and effort into the search can mean finding a ring you’ll adore forever. Take a look at five reasons that a vintage engagement ring might be the right choice for you, and then browse our extensive collection of vintage engagement rings: See full post here

Engagement Rings: Trends of the Season

What’s trending in the engagement ring market? A lot of people are getting married in 2016, and it’s shopping time. Every season, most people seem to gravitate toward certain styles and thereby set the trend.

Here is Celeste Perron from Brilliant Earth with an article on what’s trending this season.

Brilliant Earth we spend our days helping couples select the rings that symbolize their love and commitment, and designing rings that capture their individual styles and personalities. We’re excited to share some of the latest engagement ring trends we are seeing. Here are a few things we’ve noticed about the styles couples are loving in 2016 so far:

We’ve seen a return to classic elegance as couples opt for thin, petite bands, both in engagement and wedding rings. Often these rings feature accent diamonds that add subtle shimmer and make the center gemstone really pop, as seen in the Lissome Diamond Ring, which features scalloped pavé diamond accents on a thin band that rises to a cathedral setting.

When it comes to accent diamonds along the band, today’s couples gravitate toward scalloped or French pavé diamonds (a seen in the Simone Engagement Ring, above). This look minimizes visible precious metal, creating an effect of pure shimmer. Not too long ago bands with channel-set diamonds and straight pavé with metal “rails” were the go-to look. We suspect the shift toward scalloped pavé accents may be inspired by the current popularity of handcrafted vintage rings, which often feature this style of pavé. See full post here

A throwback from last year’s HallowBling and Blog event!

We thought we would share these flashback photos of our HallowBling and Blog event with you, courtesy of Rachel V Photography.

Last year we transformed our Monarch Jewelry showroom into the Wizard of Oz’s Emerald City.  As our guest arrived they walked down the yellow brick road and were surrounded by our human-sized poppy garden.

They were instructed to “pick a poppy” pen.  Each pen was numbered and was used for fun prize drawings that were awarded throughout the evening.

Once our guests were in the showroom, they were dazzled by a sea of Emerald green with the use of green up-lights provided by Elegant Entertainment and DJ Services; combined with green balloons adorned with festive tassels compliments of The Flair Exchange.

Our exquisite emeralds took center stage, and the jewelry cases were filled with green-themed décor and our fabulous gemstone jewelry.

Here are a few other images of the numerous event details.

“We’re off to the see the wizard.”   The entire staff was dressed as characters of the Wizard of Oz: the Scarecrow (John Przeclawski), Dorothy (Melinda Tomasello), the Cowardly Lion (Lee Doughtery), the Wicked Witch (Diane Pearson) and the Tin Man (Shawn Przeclawski).

Here’s Shawn visiting with Jessica Yutanco (dressed as Lilo and Stitch).

It was so much fun seeing all our blogger friends dressed up for the occasion; Bess Auer came as an Internet Troll and Sunshine Baker was Poison Ivy.  Sunshine was also the grand prize winner of the evening, winning a pair of diamond stud earrings.

Prizes included: the Emerald City Prize (a custom purse from Wanda Lopez Designs), the Yellow Brick Road Prize (Ty Style Me a styling consultation gift certificate), Poppy Garden Prize ( Mug from Melissa Creates).  Other gift items included” I’m Melting” a fondue pot from Mobella Events, Rainbow Prize (Soap lollypops from the Naked Bar Soap Company ) and other fine items from Monarch Jewelry.

The gift items were themed and packaged by Melinda Tomasello.

Our Diamond Bridal Room turned into the Rainbow Room for the evenings festivities.  A perfect room for making wishes, it is a room where dreams really do come true!  :)

Posing in front of our Rainbow photo booth are the Nice Witch (Jess AKA She Got Carried Away), Pinterest Board (Nicolette Springer AKA Working on a Project), the Devil (Tylar Schweickert AKA Ty Style Me), Minnie Mouse (Bianca Dottin AKA Elle B Styles), and Little Riding Hood (Wanda Lopez AKA Wanda Lopez Designs and My Sweet Zepol).  Bianca models her winning prize, her custom handbag created by Wanda Lopez Design.

Again, thank you Mobella Events and Rachel V Photography, our lovely guests, and to all our wonderful sponsors:  Rachel V Photography, Mobella Events , FL Blog Con, The Flair Exchange, TyStyleMe, All From Scratch BakeryJenny Bevlin Shop ♡ ChicNaked Bar Soap Company, On-Line Labels, Elegant Entertainment and DJ ServicesWanda Lopez Designs, Blogfete, Melissa Creates, My City Beauty, and Melinda Tomasello.
